Presentation

Il pianto di S. Pietro (J-C 117) is the first cantata of the cycle for Lent of 1751 composed by Sammartini for the religious functions of the five Fridays of Lent that were celebrated every year in the Reale Imperiale Congregazione del Santissimo Entierro di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo (Royal Imperial Congregation of the Most Holy Burial of Our Lord Jesus Christ) located in the Jesuit Domus Professa in San Fedele in Milan. The first performance took place on March 5, 1751 to celebrate the first Friday of Lent. The same cantata, together with J-C 118 (Il pianto delle pie donne) and J-C 121 (Maria addolorata), was performed again in Prague at the church of Saint Francis of the Sacro Ordine Militare de’ Crocieri colla stella rossa* on Holy Friday of 1753.

* Sacred Military Order of the Cross Bearers with the red star – Canonici Regulares Sanctissimae Crucis a Stella Rubea : this congregation was founded in 1233 by Saint Agnes of Bohemia and was formed by layman devoted to the care of sick at the hospital in Prague
