Presentazione

Il pianto delle pie Donne (J-C 118) is the second cantata of the Lent cycle of 1751 composed by Sammarini for the religious functions of the five Fridays of Lent that were celebrated every year in the Reale Imperiale Congregazione del Santissimo Entierro di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo (Royal Imperial Congregation of the Most Holy Burial of Our Lord Jesus Christ) located in the Domus Professa of the Jesuit Fathers in San Fedele in Milan. The first performance took place on March 12, 1751 to celebrate the second Friday of Lent. The same cantata, together with J-C 117 (Il Pianto di San Pietro) and J-C 121 (Maria Addolorata), was performed again in Prague at the church of Saint Francis of the Sacro Ordine Militare de’ Crocieri colla stella rossa* on Holy Friday of 1753. At the Congregazione del SS. Entierro it was performed again under a new title Della Passione di N.S. Gesù Cristo on March 18, 1757 as third cantata of the cycle and, again, on March 8, 1771 as a cantata per musica Sopra la SS. Passione di Nostro Signore for the evening of the third Friday of Lent.
